As a toddler BOY mom, a nursing mom, a co sleeping mom, a BCBA(board certified behavior analyst)-in-training, a special educator, a wife, need I go on? I can’t help but see potty training like an Olympic sport and even simply just introducing the potty to a 17-month-old is still an adventure.
Right now, my goal isn’t immediate success, it’s exposure and pairing. I want the potty to be a positive, familiar part of our routine, not a source of stress. So here is how I’m approaching it.
1. Pairing the Potty with Positivity : We talk about the potty, sit on it (clothed, unclothed, before diaper changes, before bath, before bed) and celebrate any interaction with praise or a preferred activity. No pressure, just exposure.
2. Modeling : Toddlers learn by imitation, so we talk about how I use the potty and model using his favorite stuff animals. We read potty books and make it part of daily conversations. When dad is around, he will model the behavior as well and say “Pee pee in the potty” so our son can correlate the actions and make that connection.
3. Identifying Signs of Readiness : Right now, I’m watching for general cues like staying dry for longer periods, showing interest in the potty, signaling when a diaper is wet or dirty.
4. Keeping It Low Pressure : No forcing, no punishment, no constant sitting every 30 min to an hour-just natural positive praise and encouragement when he shows interest.
We’re in the early stages, but I know consistency and positive praise will make all the difference. For now, we’re celebrating small wins like simply sitting on the potty without resistance, because every step counts!
For other parents, what worked for you when introducing the potty? Remember — every child is different and what works for my child may not work for your’s.
Happy Potty Training!
